Understanding the UAE Corporate Tax: What SMEs Need to Know
With the introduction of the Federal Corporate Tax, the UAE has aligned itself with global tax standards while maintaining its highly competitive business environment. For Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), understanding the nuances of this tax is critical to maintaining profitability and compliance.
The Basics of UAE Corporate Tax
The UAE Corporate Tax applies a standard statutory rate of 9% on taxable net profits exceeding AED 375,000. Profits below this threshold are subject to a 0% tax rate, specifically designed to support startups and small businesses.
Key Exemptions and Reliefs for SMEs
- Small Business Relief: Businesses with revenue below AED 3 million in a relevant tax period can elect to be treated as having no taxable income, effectively bypassing the tax obligation for that period (subject to FTA conditions). Relief is available for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2026, and not for Qualifying Free Zone Persons or large multinational group members.
- Free Zone Exemptions: Qualifying Free Zone Persons (QFZPs) can benefit from a 0% rate on qualifying income, provided they meet strict substance requirements and do not conduct non-qualifying activities with the mainland.
Compliance Requirements
Every business, regardless of whether they fall above or below the AED 375,000 threshold or operate in a free zone, must:
- Register for Corporate Tax: Obtain a Tax Registration Number (TRN) from the Federal Tax Authority (FTA).
- Maintain Financial Records: Keep accounting records and, where required (revenue above AED 50M, Qualifying Free Zone Persons and Tax Groups), audited financial statements.
- File a Tax Return: Submit an annual corporate tax return within 9 months following the end of the relevant financial year.
